چکیده

Understanding the exceptional Lie groups as the symmetry groups of simpler objects is a longstanding program in mathematics. Here, we explore one famous realization of the smallest exceptional Lie group, G2. Its Lie algebra g2 acts locally as the symmetries of a ball rolling on a larger ball, but only when the ratio of radii is 1:3. Using the split octonions, we devise a similar, but more global, picture of G2: it acts as the symmetries of a ‘spinorial ball rolling on a projective plane’, again when the ratio of radii is 1:3. We explain this ratio in simple terms, use the dot product and cross product of split octonions to describe the G2 incidence geometry, and show how a form of geometric quantization applied to this geometry lets us recover the imaginary split octonions and these operations.

Fuzzy PD Cascade Controller Design for Ball and Beam System Based on an Improved ARO Technique

The ball and beam system is one of the most popular laboratory setups for control education. In this paper, we design a fuzzy PD cascade controller for a ball and beam system using Asexual Reproduction Optimization (ARO) technique. The ball & beam system consists of a servo motor, a grooved beam, and a rolling ball. This system utilizes a servo motor to control ball’s position on the beam. Chan...

Improved Blends between Primitive Surfaces

By applying results on canal surfaces, we study exact rational parametrizations of fixed radius rolling ball blends of pairs of natural quadrics. We classify all configurations where this kind of rational parametrization is possible, and describe a general algorithm for parametrizing fixed radius rolling ball blends. The algorithm is then applied to parametrize the fixed radius rolling ball ble...

Kinematics of the Rolling Sphere and Quantum Spin∗

We consider the kinematics and control of a sphere rolling of a curved surface and analyze its rotation by mapping the system to the precession of a spin 1/2 in a magnetic field of variable magnitude and direction. This mapping is useful in understanding the role of the geometrical phase and generalizes the kinematic control problem of a ball rolling on a plane.

FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OFA ROLLED AZ31 MAGNESIUM ALLOYS PREPARED BY EPAND BB CONDITIONS

Abstract: Rotating bending fatigue tests have been performed using smooth specimens of a rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy in laboratory air at ambient temperature. Fatigue strength and characteristic was evaluated and fracture mechanism was discussed on the basis fracture surface analysis. Electrical polishing (EP) as well as deep rolling (ball burnishing (BB)) U-notched specimens were performed on ...

Neural Extrapolation of Motion for a Ball Rolling Down an Inclined Plane

It is known that humans tend to misjudge the kinematics of a target rolling down an inclined plane. Because visuomotor responses are often more accurate and less prone to perceptual illusions than cognitive judgments, we asked the question of how rolling motion is extrapolated for manual interception or drawing tasks. In three experiments a ball rolled down an incline with kinematics that diffe...
